Chat Reel: Scoonie Penn

Back to Beantown would be a dream come true

Posted: Friday June 23, 2000 05:52 PM

Height is not an issue for Scoonie Penn. Jonathan Daniel/Allsport

CNNSI Host: Welcome to today's NBA Draft chat with Scoonie Penn. Welcome Scoonie. Thanks for joining us.
Scoonie Penn: No problem.

CNNSI Host: From Guest: Scoonie, you had a great college career. Which team do you see yourself going to in the draft and how do you see yourself fitting in?
Scoonie Penn: To be honest with you, I don't see myself going to any certain team. At this point I have no idea. I think I am the type of player that will adapt to any situation I am put in.

From Marsdog: Scoonie -- what teams are showing the most interest in you?
Scoonie Penn: It's tough to say at this point. But I went for a workout in Chicago, the Clippers, Toronto and Orlando.

From Si in New Albany, Ohio: Do you think you can prove yourself in the NBA despite all of the negative comments about your height?
Scoonie Penn: I'm a 100% sure I can. Comments about my height is something I've dealt with all my life. I think I've overcome them. The bottom line is if you can play you can play.

From Bigslick: Do you think you hurt your chances of being a first round draft pick by not playing in the Chicago workouts?
Scoonie Penn: No, I don't feel I did because I had other things to take care of - school - I've played the last four years in college. The scouts in Chicago could see me in college. I just didn't see how it would help me to go there and play that extra week. What more could I have shown them?

From Guest: How would you feel about the possibility of playing for the Raptors and have you had any talks with them?
Scoonie Penn: I went there and I'd be very happy with that situation. Any PG would like to play there with Carter who'll go through the roof for you and with McGrady. Any young guy would like to be in a situation like that in Toronto.

From John Baxter in Columbus, Ohio: Scoonie, What do you think of Michael Redd's decision to enter the NBA Draft?
Scoonie Penn: Personally, I thought he should have stayed. It's his decision and his life. He'll have to live with it. I'll stick with him whatever he decides. The type of team that's coming back wouldn't have hurt him at all.

From Tony K. in Calgary, Alb.: How do you think OSU is going to do next year, with you and Redd gone? Is it Brian Brown's time to shine? Can they make the NCAA's next year?
Scoonie Penn: I think it'll be a team that's definitely capable of making the NCAA tournament. It 's time for Brian to step up and Kenny's time too. I have no worries with this team. It's well coached and they'll do tremendous.

From Nate Dogg in Charlotte, N.C.: Scoonie -- What was the most frustrating thing about sitting out during the '97-'98 season? Also, do you think your addition made that much of a difference taking basically the same team that was 8-22 in '97-'98 and leading them to a 27-9 record and the Final Four in '98-'99? Thanks and Go Bucks!
Scoonie Penn: It was tough sitting out by I tried to keep a positive attitude. The toughest part was having to sit and watch them go 8-22 and there was noting I could do. To answer the second part, I put in a lot of time working the time I sat out. I was determined to come in do well. There were other guys that played a big part, too, but I do think I played an important role in helping them get to the Final Four.

From Superstar: How do you think you compare with the other point guards in the draft?
Scoonie Penn: I think I compare well with them. I think I have the most experience of all of us. I think we match up well.

From Sam: What are your thoughts on coming back home and playing for the Celtics?
Scoonie Penn: I don't know if that's going to happen. But of that's the case, I'd be very grateful. That's what most guys look forward to - being able to go home to play. If that were to happen to me someday I would love it.

From Julia in Ohio: Do you feel that if OSU would have gotten farther in this year's NCAA Tournament, you would be rated as a higher draft pick?
Scoonie Penn: Probably. I think that has a lot to do with it. But who knows. But like I said earlier - I think I've proven I could play on any level. But maybe it could have helped me.

From: Katie in Columbus, Ohio: Out of all the things you have experienced at OSU, what will you miss the most?
Scoonie Penn: I think what I am going to miss is the relationships I've made. The type of people in Columbus and the way they treat you is what I am going to miss. There's a number of good people in that area.

CNNSI Host: That's all the time we have for today. Thanks again for joining us, Scoonie. And good luck in the NBA Draft.
Scoonie Penn: Thanks for having me. I really appreciate it.
