U.S. softball team showing signs of perfection

By Patricia Heys, CNNSI.com
They may not be playing against the toughest teams, but the U.S. national softball team is putting on a show as it travels across the country.
The team, which will compete at the Sydney Olympic Games in September, is on a 62-game tour called "Central Park to Sydney." The team usually competes against city all-star teams, but its most competitive games are against teams from the Women's Pro Softball League.
The national team is undefeated and repeatedly proving just how elite its players are. For three days in a row, U.S. pitchers have thrown perfect games. It started with Lori Harrigan on Saturday, and then Michelle Smith was perfect on Sunday. And Monday, veteran Lisa Fernandez joined them with another perfect game.
It's not a gold medal, but it's on the right track.

Australian Olympic Committee president John Coates had lobbied for equal numbers of male and female participants for indoor volleyball and water polo. Originally the 12 women's squads for indoor volleyball were to be cut from 13 to 11 players to accommodate extra beach volleyball players and the late inclusion of women's water polo in the Games program. Women's water polo squads had initially been limited to 11 players but will now contain 13 players. Coates said the percentage of female competitors would increase from 34 percent at Atlanta to 38 percent in Sydney.

Staying in the game
The U.S. named its roster for the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup, and a well-known face was back in the lineup. Briana Scurry, who has been sidelined for most of this year because of injuries, will compete. For the Americans' sake, hopefully she will stay healthy and be on the field at the Olympics.

Still in the race
Defending champion Jeannie Longo remains in the hunt for the Women's Challenge cycling race after winning three stages. The Frenchwoman is preparing for her fifth Olympics. The 11-day race ends June 18.
