Rebecca Lobo missed almost the entire 1999 WNBA season after tearing her ACL in the first game. Brian Bahr/Allsport |
By Patricia Heys, CNNSI.com
The WNBA has released the All-Star ballots for the July 17 game in Phoenix. Seventy-one players appear on the ballots, which will be distributed at WNBA arenas during June.
And it's all up to the fans. They decide which players will travel to Phoenix, which players will be known as All-Stars. Last year the Liberty's Rebecca Lobo was named to the East team despite the fact that she had played less than a minute of the 1999 season.
This year the Liberty's Kym Hampton appears on the ballot even though she has retired. Hopefully, Liberty fans don't vote her on the East team (the WNBA has said she's ineligible). Hopefully, fans across the league don't vote for their favorite players, but for players with All-Star stats.

second title at Hickory Point Golf.

Out to make history
Tegla Loroupe, the versatile distance runner from Kenya, is eyeing gold in Sydney. She finished sixth in the 1996 Games and 18th in 1992 in the marathon. No Kenyan has ever won a gold medal in the Olympics, and Loroupe would like to be the first.

A national hero
With the Olympics fast approaching, swimming has a new superstar. In a two-week period beginning in late May, Inge de Bruijn tied or broke six world records -- twice beating her own marks and winding up with four new world standards in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle and butterfly.
