OSLO, Norway (AP) - Norwegian Bjorn Daehlie, the world's winningest cross-country skier, will miss this season due to a back operation.

With eight Olympic gold medals and 12 overall in three Olympics, Daehlie has the best record of any athlete in the history of the Winter Games. He also has won more World Cup races, 48, than any other Nordic skier. He has six overall titles and nine World Championship golds.

The 32-year-old skier injured his lower back Aug. 29 when he fell while training on roller skis.

Doctors last week recommended operating on two discs in his lower back and Daehlie had surgery Thursday in Trondheim, according to his manager, Rolf Nereng.
