SONJA STEPTOE
Biography
Sonja Steptoe is a national correspondent for CNN/Sports Illustrated. As a national correspondent, she focuses on investigative and long-term assignments, as well as provides coverage of major news stories. Before joining the network, she served as a senior editor for Sports Illustrated, overseeing the editing process on a variety of different topics each week.
Steptoe joined Sports Illustrated in 1990, concentrating on investigative reporting and women's golf. In 1994 she co-authored the magazine's cover story that exposed NCAA rules violations by the Florida State University football program and covered the Mike Tyson rape trial. Before joining SI, she spent five years with The Wall Street Journal. She co-authored Jackie Joyner-Kersee's autobiography, A Kind of Grace, and authored A Guide to Women's Golf with LPGA Hall of Famer Carol Mann.
In broadcasting, Steptoe appeared on Court TV, providing analysis of the Tyson rape trial. She also regularly contributes to HBO's RealSports with Bryant Gumbel, where she has profiled Greg Maddux and Mills Lane and investigated Nike's business ventures. She won a Sports Emmy in 1999 for outstanding sports journalism.
Having been awarded degrees in economics and journalism form University of Missouri, Steptoe went on to receive a law degree from Duke University. A native of Lutcher, La., Steptoe currently resides in Manhattan.
