Wedding bells British tabloid reports Kournikova to marry BurePosted: Monday February 28, 2000 09:46 PM
LONDON (Reuters) -- Russian tennis pin-up Anna Kournikova is to wed NHL star Pavel Bure after he proposed to her at a Miami restaurant, British newspapers reported Tuesday. The 18-year-old Kournikova was photographed with Bure holding a pink rose. The mass circulation Mirror tabloid said the two appeared totally besotted with each other when they dined at Miami's Forge restaurant. The top-selling Sun tabloid said The Florida Panthers sniper proposed on bended knee as stunned diners looked on. "Yes, Pavel and Anna got engaged at my restaurant," Forge's owner Shareef Malnik was quoted as saying. Kournikova had long been romantically linked to Detroit Red Wings Russian forward Sergei Fedorov. Russian newspapers first paired Kournikova with the 28-year-old Bure in December. However, in January, the media rumor mill linked her with Mark Philippoussis during the Australian Open after she was seen in the center court stands cheering on the Australian home favorite. Both insisted they were just friends. Bure, known as the Russian Rocket for his explosive speed, was named Most Valuable Player of the 50th NHL All-Star Game earlier this month. The Mirror said Kournikova, whose looks have earned her millions in sponsorship deals and legions of fans without ever having won a WTA Tour title, had known Bure just four months.
