NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) -- Top seed Wayne Ferreira advanced, but the second-seed Jason Stoltenberg was a first-round victim Tuesday at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.

Ferreira used his serve-and-volley game to defeat Italy's Mose Navarra 6-3, 6-3 in a match that produced few spectacular shots.

Ferreira, a former top-10 player now ranked 32nd, was a late entrant into this tournament, deciding to play after a first-round loss at Wimbledon.

"I like the grass and I had such a bad Wimbledon that I wanted another match on the grass," the South African said.

Navarra didn't break Ferreira's serve, while Ferreira broke Navarra three times and capitalized on Navarra's weak second serve.

"My serve is below average in terms of speed, but I place the ball a lot better than others," said Ferreira, who repeatedly charged the net.

Stoltenberg, an Australian who lost in the semifinals last year as the No. 1 seed, dropped a three-set match to American Jonathan Stark, better known as a former Wimbledon mixed doubles champion with Martina Navratilova.

After splitting the first two sets, Stark jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third before nearly giving away the match with a double fault on a break point. After slamming his racquet in frustration, Stark persevered and took the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

"I wasn't going to let myself throw in the towel after one bad game," Stark said.

Stoltenberg blamed the loss on his own service game, saying he hit too many errant first serves and 'the second serve didn't have enough on it to give him any trouble.'

Eighth-seed Sebastien Lareau was the only other seeded player to fall, losing to Kenneth Carlsen 6-4, 6-2. Other winners included No. 3 David Prinosil, No. 7 Daniel Nestor and unseeded players Wayne Arthurs, Christian Vinck and Chris Woodruff.

In doubles action, India's Leander Paes, the world's best doubles player, teamed with Arthurs to beat Tuomas Ketola and Rogier Wassen 6-2, 6-2.
