Exclusive company Brett, Yount members of rare 3,000-hit, one-team clubPosted: Friday July 23, 1999 01:23 AM
By Ryan Hunt, CNN/SI Robin Yount and George Brett will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Sunday, but they already are part of an even more exclusive club. Brett and Yount are two of only six men this century who have reached 3,000 hits with just one team. In an era of free agency where players change teams on a whim, Yount and Brett were two pillars of consistency, longevity and stability. Brett played all 2,707 games of his career with Kansas City, while Yount played his entire 2,856-game career with the Brewers. They combined for 21,357 major league at-bats. And while Brett and Yount combined to have only three 200-hit seasons, the pair own their respective franchise records for home runs, triples, doubles and singles. In the modern era, only Willie Mays and Stan Musial have accomplished that.
Yount and Brett also are two of only three players -- joining Mays -- to have career totals of more than 3,000 hits, 250 home runs, 100 triples and 200 steals. Coincidentally, in the same year Yount and Brett will be enshrined in the Hall, two other future Hall of Famers will reach 3,000 hits playing their entire career with the same team. Through Thursday, Tony Gwynn has all 2,985 of his hits with the San Diego Padres, while Cal Ripken has his 2,953 hits entirely in an Orioles uniform. In fact, the last time two players reached 3,000 hits in the same season was 1992, when Brett and Yount each did it in September. Gwynn, Ripken and Wade Boggs all likely will reach the milestone this season.
