Fiji left out of torch relay Posted: Monday May 29, 2000 06:00 PM
SYDNEY (AP) -- Sydney 2000 Olympics organizers on Monday cut Fiji from the Olympic torch relay route. Fiji's conflict meant the torch relay would have to bypass the Pacific nation on its Oceania tour, the organizing committee SOCOG said. Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer told parliament in Canberra the Olympic flame was a symbol of peace, making its presence in Fiji inappropriate. The June 3 relay leg had been at risk since armed rebels stormed the Pacific nation's parliament on May 19, taking hostage the prime minister and members of his cabinet. The 17-day Oceania tour will end in New Zealand as scheduled before the torch begins its 100-day relay through Australia on June 8.
