On course Thailand aims for fourth straight soccer titlePosted: Thursday August 12, 1999 09:23 AM
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, (Reuters) -- Thailand's soccer players remained on course for their fourth straight Southeast Asian Games title after beating Singapore 2-0 in Thursday's semifinals in Brunei. Sripan Tawan and Ongtrakul Thawatchai scored goals either side of the break to take the Thais through to Saturday's gold medal match against Vietnam, whom they beat to win the 1995 SEA Games title in Chiang Mai. Vietnam, who have yet to concede a goal in this tournament, reached the final with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Indonesia when striker Nguyen Hong Son beat the offside trap and calmly slotted the ball home in the 70th minute. On the same day Thailand's Queen Sirikit celebrated her birthday, Thailand's competitors extended their lead at the head of the SEA Games medal standings by winning four of the 18 gold medals on offer. They won two on the shooting range as well as another pair in the women's individual and team golf events. Gulyanamitta Russamee won the individual title with a three round total of two-under-par 214 against only a handful of genuine contenders. Five players finished worse than 50 over par with the worst, Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Hang, carding 79 over after rounds of 104, 97 and 94. The men's competition was just as lopsided with Filipino Gerald Rosales compiling an impressive 72-hole total of 15-under-par 273 to win by six strokes while Laotian Annonh Inthavong was a lazy 75 shots in arrears at 60 over par. The Philippines also picked up two golds in golf and shooting with Patricio Bernardo beating the Sultan of Brunei's nephew, Prince Hakeem, on a countback in the individual skeet. Malaysia, second behind Thailand on the medals table, collected five golds, winning the men's and women's lawn bowls fours and three tenpin bowling titles. Indonesian cyclist Herry Janto Setiawan won the men's criterium with 31 points, three clear of Malaysia's Faizul Izwan Abdul Rahman while Singapore won the men's water polo gold after beating the Philippines 13-5 in the final round-robin match.
