LUCERNE, Switzerland (Reuters) -- Olympic champions Steve Redgrave and Matt Pinsent were back on the winning trail on the opening day of a World Cup regatta in Lucerne on Friday.

The pair's 61-race winning sequence ended in Munich six weeks ago when the British coxless four finished fourth in a World Cup event.

Tim Foster was ruled out of the crew by a serious hand injury that day but he was back on Friday and the British quartet won their heat comfortably.

They were slower than Romania and Australia, the winners of the other two heats.

Redgrave and Pinsent switched to the coxless fours in 1997 after unparalleled success in the coxless pairs.

Competition continues on Saturday with the semifinals.
