Yagudin: "When I finished, I knew I was European champion for the second time." AP |
PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP) -- Alexei Yagudin retained his European men's title with a presure-packed routine that included a quadruple jump Thursday at the European Figure Skating Championships.
Yagudin, the current world champion, rebounded from a poor qualifying performance earlier in the week to complete the quad toe loop and seven triple jumps with only a slight bobble on his final triple salchow.
"When I finished, I knew I was European champion for the second time," the 18-year-old Yagudin said.
All of his marks were in the 5.7 to 5.9 range, winning firsts from all the judges for his routine to "Lawrence of Arabia." Third entering the free program, his victory in the final portion worth 50 percent clinched the title.

His principal Russian rivals and teammates for the crown fell out of contention but managed to finish second and third.
Yevgeny Plushenko did a quadtriple combination but tumbled twice while attempting triple jumps.
Alexei Urmanov, the 1994 Olympic and 1997 European champion, fell on a triple axel and cut down two other jumps to come in third.
Urmanov, at 25 the oldest and most experienced of the three, won the short program to lead entering the free program, similar to the 1997 worlds were he had to withdraw and then miss 16 months of competitions.
The Russians have won both the pairs and men's title this year and are halfway on their way to its third consecutive sweep of the victories at this competition.
