PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP) -- Russians Maria Petrova and Alexei Tikhonov captured the pairs title at the European Figure Skating Championshp Wednesday after their teammates and defending champions withdrew just before the final program.

World and European pairs champions Yelena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze withdrew from the competition two hours before the start of the final free program after Berezhnaya was diagnosed with the flu.

Leading after the short, the Olympic silver medallists had won nine competitions in a row since last February.

Second to Petrova and Tikhonov were Dorota Zagorska and Mariusz Siudek of Poland. Third were Sarah Abitbol and Stephane Bernadis of France.

Petrova and Tikhonov have been skating together less than a year. She previously won two world junior titles with Sihardulidze.

The new champions moved up from fifth to first with a solid routine to Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" that included good side-by-side triple jumps and two throw triple moves.

Their marks were from 5.6 to 5.8 although skating in the next to last group.
