Thailand's Sasakul sucessfully defends flyweight belt Posted: Fri May 1, 1998 at 10:54 p.m. EDT Chatchai Sasakul of Thailand retained his World Boxing Council flyweight title with a fifth-round knockout of South Korean Young Soon Chang tonight in Bangkok, Thailand. Chatchai (33-1, 24 kos) making the second defense of his 112-pound title, sent Young to the canvas with right to the body and the challenger was unable to beat the referee's count. In May 1997, Chatchai outpointed Ysaias Zamudio of Mexico to capture the WBC interim flyweight title. The champion at the time, Russian-born, Japanese-based Yuri Arbachakov, was unable to defend the flyweight belt after wrist surgery. Chatchai was to defend the interim title and meet Arbachakov when he recovered from surgery to unify the titles. After one title defense of the interim title, Chatchai avenged the lone loss of his career when outpointed Arbachakov in November to become the sole holder of the WBC flyweight title. Young, who got the title shot despite losing a title eliminator to Gabriel Mira of Mexico in March, fell to 21-3.© 1998 Sportsticker Enterprises, LP
