The Hot List

Posted: Monday August 16, 1999 10:09 AM

Sports Illustrated's Jon Wertheim takes a weekly look at who's hot and who's not in the tennis world.

AD IN

Steffi Graf: Simply the best. Now, if only she can find the joy that often seemed to elude her while she played tennis.

Pete Sampras: Says, "G'day, mate," to Rafter in Cincy finals. After a desultory first half of the year, the world's No. 1 player has suddenly reeled off 22 wins in a row.

Serena Williams: In her first tournament since the French Open, Lady Lats steamrolls Martina Hingis in semis and goes on to win Acura Classic.

Julie Halard-Decugis: Though she falls in Acura final, little-known femme takes out Mary Pierce and Lindsay Davenport with savvy shotmaking and go-for-broke tennis.

Michael Chang: Quarterfinal showing in Cincinnati -- including wins over Marat Safin, Alex Corretja, and Cedric Pioline -- shows that the gas gauge isn't totally on empty.

AD OUT

Tennis fans: You knew it was coming eventually, but Graf's retirement is a profound loss.

Lindsay Davenport: Sloppy play against Halard-Decugis in Acura semis spoils return to her hometown tournament.

Anna Kournikova: Stress fracture in right foot might sideline her for U.S. Open. X-ray technician is the first non-paparazzi member to photograph her this year.

Simon Larose and Derek Turek: Cheech and Chong doubles team robbed while trying to score some pot at a USTA Challenger event in Binghamton.

Say, didn't you used to be Irina Spirlea?
