When I was doing my scouting reports on the Jets for Sports Illustrated's NFL Preview Issue I did a little research project. I wondered what the chances were for Vinny Testaverde, who'll be 39 in November, to be productive at his age. So I looked up every NFL quarterback in history who competed after his 38th birthday and used a few of them in the piece, but since the chart is sitting right here in front of me, I thought I'd give you the full roster. Age 38 and beyond, final season or seasons. Alphabetically, with Hall of Famers first, here they are:

Hall of Famers
Sammy Baugh -- A few token appearances at 38
George Blanda -- Full-time starter for Houston at 38 and 39 ... nine more years at Oakland as kicker and spot-QB
Len Dawson -- Injured at 38, fading as starter at 39, one more year as backup
Sonny Jurgensen -- Starter at 38 but missed most of the season with torn Achilles tendon ... battled Billy Kilmer for starting spot at 39 and 40 on playoff teams
Joe Montana -- decent year as K.C. starter at 38, lost in first round of the playoffs ... had a better year at 37, taking the Chiefs to the AFC Championship game
Fran Tarkenton -- Full-time starter at 38 on playoff team ... threw 32 interceptions
John Unitas -- Starter at 38 on playoff team, injured, sub-par season ... played in eight games at 39, injured again ... brief appearances for San Diego at 40, bad back, couldn't finish the season
