DALLAS 34, ST LOUIS 31

Troy Aikman tossed an eight-yard touchdown pass and Kevin Mathis returned an interception 27 yards for a score as the Dallas Cowboys built a 17-point lead and held on to defeat the St. Louis Rams, 34-31.

Aikman, who played just a half, completed 14-of-25 passes for 160 yards, including the scoring toss to tight end Eric Bjornson with 2:30 left in the second quarter. Emmitt Smith also saw his most extensive action of the preseason, carrying 12 times for 24 yards.

Michael Irvin had a big first half for Dallas (1-2), catching seven passes for 90 yards.

Tony Banks threw a pair of 33-yard touchdown passes to second-year wide receiver Eddie Kennison, both in the second quarter, for St. Louis. Banks was 9-for-16 for 160 yards and two TDs in one half.

Former top pick Lawrence Phillips carried nine times for 15 yards and Kennison finished with three receptions for 78 yards.

During the game, the Rams (1-2) announced they have agreed to terms with offensive tackle Orlando Pace, the top overall pick in the 1997 draft.
