MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Asad Abdul-Khaliq threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score, leading Minnesota to a 42-31 victory over porous Wisconsin in a meeting of Big Ten Conference also-rans. The longest continuously played series in Division I-A lost some luster as neither team is headed for a bowl. Minnesota reclaimed Paul Bunyan's Axe -- the symbol of the series -- for the first time since 1994 as it snapped a three-game slide and dealt Wisconsin its fourth loss in five games. Abdul-Khaliq completed 17-of-25 passes for 265 yards with an interception. His 45-yard touchdown pass to Ron Johnson gave Minnesota (4-7, 2-6 Big Ten) a 35-31 lead with 1:25 left in the third quarter. The sophomore quarterback directed a 16-play, 71-yard drive that he capped with a three-yard scoring run, extending the advantage to 42-31 with 8:10 to play. Abdul-Khaliq threw first-half TD passes of 59 and 38 yards to Ben Utecht, who caught three passes for 104 yards. Tellis Redmon had 128 yards on 18 carries and Thomas Tapeh and Marion Barber ran for scores for the Golden Gophers, who were outgained, 494-477, but did not allow a score over the final 20 minutes. Redmon eclipsed 1,000 yards, becoming the first Minnesota back to do it in consecutive seasons since Darrell Thompson in 1986-87. Anthony Davis ran for 208 yards and three touchdowns and Lee Evans set the Big Ten single-season receiving yardage record for Wisconsin (5-7, 3-5), which allowed at least 42 points for the fourth time this season. Evans, a junior, caught nine passes for 151 yards, running his totals to 75 and 1,545, both school marks. He surpassed the previous Big Ten one-year yardage mark of 1,435 set by David Boston of Ohio State. Utecht and Davis swapped a pair of touchdowns in the first half before Barber's six-yard run gave Minnesota a 28-21 halftime lead. Davis, who also had a 61-yard scoring jaunt, banged in from the 1 for the second time to tie the game with 8:31 remaining in the third quarter. Mark Nueser kicked a 31-yard field goal just over three minutes later to give the Badgers the lead, but they did not score again.
