TUSCALOOSA, Alabama (Ticker) -- Alabama kept alive hopes of a winning season under first-year coach Dennis Franchione by rallying for a 24-17 Southeastern Conference victory over Mississippi State. The Crimson Tide (4-5, 3-4 SEC West), who snapped a three-game losing streak, erased a 17-10 deficit by scoring a pair of touchdowns in the final 11 minutes. Alabama tied it on Andrew Zow's nine-yard TD pass to Donnie Lowe with 11:15 remaining, then took the lead for good on Santonio Beard's 14-yard TD run with 5:44 to play. Beard rushed for 95 yards on 15 carries, also scoring on a six-yard TD scamper in the first quarter. Zow completed 12-of-22 passes for 157 yards with no interceptions. Mississippi State (2-6, 1-5) erased an early 10-0 deficit to grab a 17-10 lead on Kevin Fant's nine-yard TD pass to Justin Jenkins with 1:24 left in the third period. Fant completed 17-of-29 passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns for the Bulldogs. Dontae Walker paced Mississippi State on the ground with 101 yards on 15 carries. The Crimson Tide surpassed their win total of last year, when they went 3-8 under Mike Dubose. They have games remaining against Auburn and Southern Mississippi. Mississippi State was unable to build on last week's win over Kentucky and lost for the sixth time in seven games. The defeat assured the Bulldogs of their first losing season since 1996.
