  • April 24: NBA Board of Governors announces Women's National Basketball Association will begin play June 1997.

  • August 7: Val Ackerman named WNBA president.

  • October 23: WNBA signs Rebecca Lobo and Sheryl Swoopes.

  • October 30: Eight teams announced for inaugural season -- Charlotte, Cleveland, Houston, New York, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Sacramento, Utah.

    1997

  • January 22: Sixteen players assigned to teams.

  • April 28: Tina Thompson selected No. 1 in inaugural draft.

  • May 21: WNBA uniforms unveiled.

  • June 21: Season tips off.

  • August 22: League attendance goes over the one million mark.

  • August 24: Regular season ends.

  • August 30: Houston defeats New York 65-51 in win WNBA championship.
     

  • November 11: Detroit and Washington approved as expansion teams for 1998 season.

    1998

  • February 18: Rhonda Blades and Heidi Burge are top selections in expansion draft.

  • April 22: Minnesota and Orlando approved as expansions teams for 1999 season.

  • April 28: Margo Dykek selected as top pick in draft.

  • June 11: Regular season begins.

  • August 21: Teresa Weatherspoon named Defensive Player of the Year.

  • August 22: Suzie McConnell Serio named Newcomer of the Year. Tracy Reid named Rookie of the Year. Van Chancellor named Coach of the Year. Cynthia Cooper named Most Valuable Player.

  • August 25: Suzie McConnell Serio wins Sportsmanship Award.

  • September 1: Houston defeats Phoenix to win WNBA championship.

    1999

  • April 6: Brandy Reed and Andrea Congreaves are top selections in expansion draft.

  • April 14: WNBA and players association agree to terms of a four-year collective bargaining agreement.

  • May 4: Chamique Holdsclaw is the No. 1 pick (Washington) in the draft.

  • June 8: Regular season begins.

  • July 14: West defeats East 79-61 in inaugural All-Star Game in New York City. Lisa Leslie named MVP.

  • July 27: Houston's Sheryl Swoopes records the WNBA's first triple-double (14 points, 15 rebounds, 10 assists) against Detroit.

  • August 23: WNBA draws 1,959,733 fans during the regular season.

  • August 26: Yolanda Griffith named Newcomer of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.

  • August 27: Dawn Staley wins Sportsmanship Award.

  • August 28: Chamique Holdsclaw named Rookie of the Year.

  • August 31: Van Chancellor named Coach of the Year.

  • September 1: Yolanda Griffith named Most Valuable Player.

  • October 22: Indiana, Miami, Portland and Seattle approved as expansion teams for 2000.

  • December 15: Gordana Grubin, Edna Campbell, Kate Starbird and Alisa Burras are top selections in expansion draft.

    2000

  • April 25: Ann Wauters selected first (Cleveland) in the draft.
