NORFOLK, Virginia (Ticker) -- Katie Remke made a free throw with two seconds left as 12th seed Southern Methodist spoiled the return of Summer Erb with a stunning 64-63 first-round triumph over No. 5 North Carolina State in the Midwest Region.

SMU (22-8) notched a first-round victory in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year and will face Old Dominion on Monday in the second round.

Freshman Kaayla Chones scored six points in a 10-0 burst as NC State closed to 46-44 with 10:17 remaining. Erb, seeing her first action since missing seven games with a broken left foot, added a jumper.

Anika Calvert hit two free throws to give the Mustangs a 63-61 lead with 83 seconds left. It remained that way for almost a minute until Erb hit the tying layup with 27 seconds to play.

Remke was fouled by Chones and, after missing the first free throw nailed the second as SMU notched its first win against an Atlantic Coast Conference school.

A strong defensive effort was expected as the Wolfpack's foes shoot just 38 percent from the floor while the Mustangs' opponents make 39 percent. Both teams shot exactly 39 percent (25-of-65) and SMU won despite shooting just 34 percent (12-of-35) in the second half.

D-dra Rucker scored 18 points and co-Mountain West Conference Player of the Year Karlin Kennedy added 16 and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs, who have won seven of their last nine games.

Erb, who was NC State's leading scorer with 15.8 points per contest, finished with 21 and 10 rebounds. Chones added 13 points for the Wolfpack, a 1998 Final Four participant with just one NCAA Tournament win since.
