ATHENS, Georgia (Ticker) -- Milena Flores scored six of her 20 points in overtime as ninth seed Stanford picked up its first NCAA Tournament victory in three years, an 81-74 triumph over No. 8 Michigan in a first-round West Region clash. The Cardinal denied the Wolverines their first NCAA Tournament triumph since 1990 and will face top seed Georgia in a second-round contest on Monday. Anne Thorius converted a three-point play with one minute gone in the extra session to bring Michigan within 68-67. But Stanford scored the next seven points en route to its seventh win in nine contests. Lindsey Yamasaki and Sarah Dimson each hit a jumper before Bethany Donaphin hit a free throw and Flores added two to give the Cardinal a 75-67 lead with 91 seconds left. Stanford hit 4-of-4 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the line in overtime while Michigan was 4-of-10 from the field. The Wolverines scored 10 straight points to take a 50-49 lead with 8:27 left in regulation. LeeAnn Bies scored seven points in that stretch and Thorius banked in a 3-pointer. Flores hit 1-of-2 free throws with 15 seconds left in regulation to put the Cardinal ahead, 64-62. But Thorius forced overtime as her jumper danced on the rim and dropped in with three seconds to play. Stanford had not won an NCAA Tournament game since advancing to the Final Four in 1997. The Cardinal were upset by Harvard in 1998 as a top seed and fell to Maine last season. Donaphin scored 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting and Dimson added 14 for Stanford, which shot 48 percent (28-of-59) from the floor but just 36 percent (8-of-22) in the second half. Thorius scored 19 points and Stacey Thomas added 12 for the Wolverines, who shot 41 percent (30-of-74) and fell to 1-3 in the NCAA Tournament.
