SALT LAKE... OF KEITH JOHNSON highlighted a six-run second inning with a grand slam and the Stingers went on to beat Tacoma, 12-1, August 23. Johnson finished with two hits and six RBI. RHP STEVE GREEN allowed just a run and seven hits in six innings to pick up the win. Green improved to 3-0 with a 2.79 ERA in five starts since being pounded for 10 runs and 14 hits over 4 1/3 innings on June 28...

SS JEROME ALVISO went 1-for-24 in seven games August 17-23....

ARKANSAS... 1B MIKE O'KEEFE hit a longball in the top of the 11th inning as the Travelers edged El Paso, 5-4, August 21. A 12th-round pick in 1999, O'Keefe, who also hit an two-run double in the ninth inning, struck a two-out offering from Brandon Medders over the right field fence to plate the winning run. RHP BOBBY JENKS tossed six scoreless innings for Arkansas but did not figure in the decision. Jenks, who was selected in the fifth-round of the 2000 draft, scattered four hits, issued four walks and struck out six batters to extend his streak of holding opponents without an earned run to 29 2/3 innings. His streak was snapped on August 26, when he allowed a pair of runs and struck out 10 over seven frames for a tough-luck loss...

RHP MIKE BRUNET spun his first career shutout as the Travelers pounded El Paso, 11-0, August 22. Brunet scattered seven hits, only three over the final six frames, struck out six and did not issue a walk, retiring six straight men on two separate occasions...

3B JUNIOR ZAMORA fell a home run away from the cycle August 23, going 3-for-5 with an RBI....

RANCHO CUCAMONGA... LHP TIM BITTNER threw a three-hit shutout in the first game of a doubleheader at Lake Elsinore, 4-0, August 24. Bittner yielded three hits, issued a walk and struck out six to improve to 4-0 in his first five starts with the Quakes since being acquired from the Chicago White Sox in a trade that included Scott Schoeneweis. The 23-year-old has allowed just two unearned runs and 13 hits over his first 27 2/3 frames in the California League, striking out 27...

1B CASEY KOTCHMAN hit safely in 14 straight games (27-51, 4 2B, 4 HR, 10 RBI) August 9-24...

RHP ERVIN SANTANA, the league's leader in ERA (2.53), was named the league's Pitcher of the Year. 3B DALLAS MCPHERSON and C JEFF MATHIS were named to the all-star squad....

CEDAR RAPIDS... RHP ABEL MORENO allowed two hits over seven scoreless innings in his first start since being promoted from Provo of the Pioneer League, beating Beloit, 3-0, August 21 to win his ninth straight start. Moreno, who did not allow a hit until the fifth inning, ran his winning streak to 13 decisions dating back to August 1, 2002 when he was in the Arizona League. On August 26, the 20-year-old Moreno gave up just a run and nine hits over 6 2/3 innings, fanning seven, but suffered a 1-0 loss to Lansing, ending his streak...

3B ADAM PAVKOVICH hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning to beat the Lugnuts, 7-6, August 25. 2B ERICK AYBAR went 5-for-6 with a double, triple and four runs score in the winning effort. Aybar extended his hitting streak to 10 games (22-42, 4 2B, 2 3B, 5 RBI, 4 SB) with that performance....

PROVO... 2B HOWIE KENDRICK hit three doubles (4-4, 3 RBI) on August 26 in a 6-4 win against Idaho Falls...

LHP DANIEL DAVIDSON spun seven scoreless innings (6 H, 0 BB, 5 SO) in a 14-1 win against Idaho Falls August 25. SS JOSE GUZMAN had five RBI (3-4, 2 2B, 1 HR)...

2B HOWIE KENDRICK hit .722 (13-18, 4 2B, 1 HR, 6 RBI) in four games August 24-27. He reached base safely in 26 consecutive games July 18-August 23 (40-96, 11 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 17 RBI, 6 SB) and also scored a run in 12 consecutive games August 8-23....
