Front office bound? Molitor expected to discuss end of playing careerPosted: Thursday December 03, 1998 02:48 PM
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Paul Molitor, who is eighth on baseball's career hit list, planned to discuss his future Thursday at a news conference, amid speculation that he was close to taking a job with the Milwaukee Brewers. Molitor, 42, a St. Paul native who played his first 15 seasons in Milwaukee, three with Toronto and his last three with the Twins, has said he is likely to retire. However, the 21-year veteran has not ruled out the possibility of playing another season. Twins spokesman Sean Harlin would not speculate on what announcement, if any, Molitor planned. Brewers spokesman Jon Greenberg said a news conference planned by Molitor would have nothing to do with Molitor's future in Milwaukee. The Brewers have been talking to Molitor about a front-office job that might include coaching and personnel duties. Molitor said earlier this month he has been contacted by several teams, both about playing and off-field possibilities. Ron Simon, Molitor's agent, did not return telephone calls today. Molitor singled in his final at-bat for the Twins last season, the 3,319th hit of his career. He is one of only three players -- Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner are the others -- to collect 3,000 hits, 600 doubles and 500 stolen bases. Although his batting average dipped to .281 last season, he still hit .343 with runners in scoring position, including an AL-best .386 with two outs.
