Hammonds, Mathews latest injuries for Orioles

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Baltimore Orioles placed outfielder Jeffrey Hammonds and reliever Terry Mathews on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, further depleting a team that has struggled with injuries throughout the season.

Hammonds has been bothered by back spasms since his last appearance, as a pinch-runner June 2.

"It's been five days it has not progressed. It's limited both my throwing and hitting in a major way," he said. "Running the bases isn't enough. We need another outfielder."

The Orioles called up outfielder Jesus Tavarez from Triple-A Rochester to replace Hammonds. Tavarez, 27, was batting .267 in 44 games with 14 RBIs and 11 steals in 13 attempts.

Mathews hit the disabled list for a second time as starter Mike Mussina ended his second stint on the DL. Mussina started against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday, 23 days after having his nose broken by a line drive off the bat of Cleveland's Sandy Alomar.

Mathews, who missed nearly a month with an inflamed right wrist, was placed on the disabled list April 30 and forced into action May 29 to aid a depleted bullpen.

"Terry went 30 days without pitching in a game and two-thirds of that without throwing a ball," Orioles manager Ray Miller said. "Unfortunately, when we had no immediate solutions, Terry jumped in there. He had a couple of decent outings, [but] I don't think it's fair to him."

Miller said Mathews' delivery was probably hindered by his early return.

"The first two times out he had his arm in that new, low delivery and it looked pretty good," Miller said. "But the last time he was back up and he was stiff. Hopefully this is a way to remedy that and get him back to 100 percent."

Mathews is 0-1 with a 7.50 ERA. In 12 innings he has yielded five home runs.

"It's basically the same stiffness you get in spring training," Mathews said of his right shoulder. "Physically, there's nothing wrong. They explained to me that we have a chance to something to correct things because of the way I had to come back before I had a chance to rehab."
